If you’re a passionate scrapbooker looking to take her crafting skills to the next level, attending Creating Keepsakes University could be the experience of a lifetime.
About Creating Keepsakes University
Creating Keepsakes University, also known as CKU, is a special “school” for scrapbookers created by Lisa Bearnson, founder of Creating Keepsakes magazine. The first CKU event was held in 2001. Since then, attending one of these amazing workshops has become a rite of passage for serious scrapbookers.
Creating Keepsakes University events take place throughout the year at different locations around the United States. CKU is sponsored by some of the biggest names in scrapbooking, including Making Memories, Rusty Pickle, 7 Gypsies, Cosmo Cricket, Prima, Fancy Pants Designs, and Scenic Route.
Although tuition for CKU is rather expensive, the experience is one you won’t soon forget. Some of the many reasons to attend Creating Keepsakes University include:
- You’ll be able to learn new crafting techniques in classes taught by Ali Edwards, Tim Holtz, Jessica Sprague, Stacy Croninger, and all your favorite Creating Keepsakes contributors.
- You’ll be able to connect with scrapbookers from around the world, forming lifelong friendships with amazing women who share your passion for preserving life’s precious memories.
- You’ll be able to participate in fun contests and challenges that stretch your creative muscles.
- You’ll have a chance to enjoy scrapbooking away from the pressures of everyday life. If you find it difficult to fit in scrapbooking between work and taking care of your children, attending CKU will give you plenty of opportunities to enjoy your craft in a relaxing atmosphere.
The CKU Curriculum
One of the most amazing things about the hobby of scrapbooking is that it is constantly evolving. Even if you’ve been creating layouts for years, innovative new products are being released on a regular basis. This means that there is always something fresh and fun for the scrapbooking enthusiast to try.
The CKU curriculum varies according to date and location. Typically, the classes are designed for those who have intermediate to advanced scrapbooking skills and are looking to create projects with a very artistic flair. Some of the topics you can expect to find covered include:
- Finding scrapbook inspiration in unusual places
- Creating a theme album, such as a 6x6 travel book documenting a recent vacation
- Working with new products and techniques, such as albums with clear acrylic covers
- Incorporating digital scrapbooking techniques into traditional scrapbooking projects
- Techniques for composing meaningful journaling that tells the story behind your photos
- Photography tips and tricks
- Using scrapbooking supplies to design altered art projects, gifts, and home décor items
Aside from scrapbooking classes and open cropping times, CKU also includes plenty of opportunities for socializing. Many of the previous attendees compare the event to a cross between summer camp, cheerleading practice, and a sorority rush. At the end of the classes, there is also a festive graduation ceremony for you to celebrate your scrapbooking achievements.
Registering for CKU

The site provides information about locations, accommodations, and available workshops. Online registration is also available; although you’ll want to make sure you plan ahead.
