Make Your Own Paper
When you can't find free digital scrapbooking paper online that fits your needs, making your own customized paper is easier than you might expect.
Photo Backgrounds
Photos make great backgrounds for digital scrapbooking, especially vacation pages where you happen to have lots of images of beautiful scenery. Simply enlarge your favorite picture to cover the entire page, then adjust the opacity to give it a soft and muted appearance. Converting the image to black and white or a sepia tone can also create a unique look for your page.
Scanned Memorabilia
If you have memorabilia you'd like to include in a scrapbook that may not be archival safe, consider scanning the objects and turning the image into a background for your layout. This technique works well with everything from maps and postcards to old coins and dried flower petals.
Text Paper
Text paper is a favorite choice of many scrapbookers because it's fun and functional. You can repeat lines from a favorite poem, song lyrics, a simple phrase, or names and dates across the back of your page to make a background paper that's as unique as your family's memories. Download some funky free fonts to play with, then experiment with the size and color of your text in your favorite scrapbooking software. If you need to separate lines in the text, add a character from a dingbat font that matches the theme of your project.
Repeat a Pattern
Making simple geometric papers in Adobe Photoshop Elements is a fairly easy process.
- Use font dingbats or the shape drawing tools to create a pleasing design on a 2x2 canvas. To make sure your pattern is symmetrical, go under the "View" menu and select "Grid" and "Rulers."
- Go to "Define Pattern" under the "Edit" menu and give your pattern a name that you will be able to remember.
- Create a new 12x12 canvas.
- Go to "Fill" under the "Edit" menu. Use the custom pattern box to select the pattern you want to be applied to your paper.
- Save your image as a high resolution JPEG file before using it to create your scrapbook layout.
