Leather Scrapbook Albums

From LoveToKnow Scrapbooking

Leather scrapbook albums provide an elegant and sophisticated way to display your family’s precious memories.

Why Leather?

There are many different reasons crafters choose leather scrapbook albums for their layouts. For example:

  • Leather albums typically have a simple design that works well with many different scrapbooking styles.
  • Leather albums look attractive when displayed on a bookshelf.
  • Leather albums tend to be more durable than albums made from vinyl or canvas fabric.
  • Leather albums give even a newly created scrapbook an “heirloom” quality.

Album Types

The first step to choosing a scrapbook album is to decide what type of album best suits your needs. Basic types of scrapbook albums include:

  • Post-bound: A post-bound album is the most common type of scrapbook. It uses a post and screw system to keep your pages neatly organized. After creating a layout on acid-free cardstock or patterned paper, you simply slide it into the plastic page protector. To add more pages, you can purchase post extensions.
  • Three-ring: A three-ring album resembles the standard binders you’re familiar with from school. Large D-rings keep your pages in place. This album is very easy to use, but it’s not expandable. Once the rings are full, you’ll need a new album.
  • Strap-hinge: A strap-hinge album works by threading two straps through a set of small metal hinges on the back of each page. In this type of album, you can complete your layout directly in the book. The album pages are made of heavy cardstock and the plastic page protectors are sleeves that slip on from the side.
  • Spiral-bound: Spiral bound scrapbook albums are essentially fancier versions of the notebooks and journals you can find in any large stationary store. They are inexpensive, but often don’t include plastic page projectors.

Album Sizes

Once you know what type of album you want, you’ll need to choose a size for your leather scrapbook album. Options include:

  • 12x12: This size has become the standard of the scrapbooking world, since its versatility allows for many different types of projects.
  • 8 ½ x 11: These albums are ideal for scrapbooking formal 8x10 portraits.
  • 9x9: If you find yourself overwhelmed by the size of 12x12 paper, this size is a good alternative for everyday scrapbooking.
  • 8x8: An 8x8 album makes a great choice for scrapbooking your family vacation.
  • 6x6: Use a 6x6 album for themed projects such as an ABC album or a “10 Reasons Why I Love You” book for your spouse.
  • 4x4: These little albums are fun options for completing projects with your children. Let them create a book to display school photos of their friends.
  • 3x3: This tiny album is a great choice for a brag book to keep in your purse.

Buying Leather Scrapbook Albums

If you’re looking for a leather scrapbook album, consider the following choices:

  • Handbound Leather Books by Marcia Engeltjes are beautiful works of art. Although the price makes these albums a definite investment, they are a wonderful choice for heritage or wedding scrapbooks.
  • Generations leather post-bound albums are a simple yet practical choice for any scrapbooker.
  • Scrapworks makes a Bay Box album that features a cut out front window and a unique design that allows the album to be displayed as creative home décor.
  • Making Memories has a line of bonded leather scrapbooks available in colors such as chocolate, asphalt, lavender, sky, and red apple. These albums include a display window cut out that lets you personalize the cover with a photo or album title.
  • Heartland combines leather and suede to create a two-toned album that is both attractive and affordable.

Buying Album Refill Pages

Most leather scrapbook albums will come with 10-20 plastic page protectors. However, you’ll probably want to purchase refill pages for your album at some point. Since different album styles require different refill types, this can be a tricky task for the novice scrapbooker.

The insert that comes with your album should provide information on which style of refill pages you should purchase. If not, the store where you purchased the album should be able to provide assistance in choosing the correct scrapbook refills.
