About Stamp and Scrapbook Conventions

Who Attends?

Wondering if a stamp and scrapbooking convention is right for you? Whether you're an experienced scrapbook professional or a rubber stamping novice, chances are it is. Conventions are designed with all levels of artists in mind, so you can find new ideas and techniques no matter what level you're at.

Conventions or expos typically involve a variety of activities, including:

  • Classes and Workshops: Classes showcasing specific aspects of rubber stamping and scrapbooking to help you hone your skills and try new techniques.
  • Crops: Engage with others who love scrapbooking, meet new people, and gain inspiration.
  • Exhibits and Shopping: Exciting products and tools are available from vendors to add to your collection.
  • Demonstrations and Speakers: See how to use new products and get inspired by artists.
  • Raffles and Contests: Scrapbooking and stamping contests may be held in addition to door prize or ticket-purchase raffle drawings.

Admission, Costs, and Accommodations

Shows are often scheduled for one or two days, typically on weekends. Most conventions require an admission cost, which may range from five to over ten dollars. Some shows allow you to save money by purchasing a weekend pass at a lower cost, or local retailers may offer discount tickets. Purchasing tickets in advance may also be reduced in price. A separate fee is often charged for parking.

Finding accommodations is up to the individuals attending the convention; be sure to reserve hotel rooms in advance if you are attending a large convention. Since conventions are held in many areas, many also choose to only attend shows close enough to commute to.

The conventions are typically held at expo or convention centers, fairgrounds buildings, or other civic or community centers. Stamp and scrapbook shows may be help alone or as part of a larger craft or art conventions.

Preparing for the Convention

Your experience at the convention can be even better with a little bit of preparation. Some tips to help you have the best time include:

  • Dress comfortably and wear comfortable shoes. You may be doing a lot of walking to various exhibits, demos, and classes, so comfortable clothing and footwear can help ensure you're relaxed and able to focus on having a good time.
  • Bring cash for parking, admission fees, and any purchases. You may not be able to use credit cards, so having enough cash will ensure admission and purchasing any refreshments, products, or tools.
  • Find out about any contests or challenges well in advance. Since many conventions offer contests for cards and scrapbook pages, be sure to find out about the contests well enough in advance that you can create your entry if you are interested in doing so.
  • Be aware that some classes may require reservations and/or fees. Check into which options are most interesting to you and sign up for classes if required. Room may also be limited for crops; be sure to register if needed.
  • Check convention policies before you go. Some prohibit items like cameras, strollers, and outside food.

Rubber stamping scrapbook conventions are not only fun, but productive as well -- allowing you to hone and learn new skills. With a little foresight, you can attend the shows you want and be prepared for a great time.
