Scrapbook Titles
From LoveToKnow Scrapbooking
Scrapbook titles are a simple way to quickly convey the purpose of a particular layout. Depending upon how you create your titles, however, they can also function as a design element for your page.
About Scrapbook Titles
There are many different ways to come up with titles for a scrapbook layout. Here are just a few ideas to try:
- Cute sayings, such as "Snug as a Bug in a Rug" for a picture of your children sleeping or "Man's Best Friend" for a page about your dog
- Lyrics from a song, such as using your part of your favorite love song for a page with pictures from your wedding anniversary celebration
- Funny things your children say, such as your toddler calling your Halloween pumpkins "Cumpkeens"
- Famous quotes that you feel apply to the theme of your page
If you're having trouble coming up with titles for a particular project, LoveToKnow Scrapbooking suggests visiting the following helpful Web sites:
- Scrapbook.com, one of the largest scrapbooking sites online, has a section of its Web site devoted to title suggestions for your layouts.
- Two Peas in a Bucket has a section of its Web site called "Pea Soup" that features title ideas and journaling starters for a number of different scrapbooking projects.
- Scrap Sayings has a nicely organized directory of title ideas for some of the most common scrapbook page themes.
- Quote Mountain, one of the more popular quotation directories online, has a page of quotes that are especially well-suited for use as scrapbook page titles.
Ideas for Creative Title Treatments
Even though scrapbook titles serve a very practical purpose that doesn't mean they have to be boring. Consider trying one or more of the following techniques to help turn your page title into a unique design element:
- Write your title in sand, snow, or on a chalkboard, then take a picture of it to use on your scrapbook layout.
- Use rub-on letters to write your title in the white space of one of your photos.
- Combine alphabet stickers, rub-on letters, and chipboard word embellishments for a mixed media title treatment
- Add interest to your title by substituting themed embellishments for some of the words or letters. For example, you could use a sun-shaped brad to dot the letter "i" in a layout about swimming. Or, you could use a cat sticker to replace the word "dog" in a page about your crazy feline companion.
- Create your title by highlighting key words from your journaling block. For example, you could highlight the words "I love you" in a page featuring a letter to your spouse.
- If you have photos from an event that feature a lot of background or are slightly blurry, crop them into letters to use to make a unique title for your scrapbook layout.
- Use the fun online tools listed on the Scrapbook Scrapbook Web site to make computer generated titles.
- Use your title as a place to experiment with hand lettering, especially if you normally type your scrapbook journaling. Even small touches of your handwriting can add a personalized look to your scrapbook layout.
Are Titles Always Necessary?
If you're a beginning scrapbooker, you may find yourself wondering if there is a rule that you must have a title on every layout. Fortunately, the best thing about scrapbooking is that there are no rules! If you like the way your page looks with no title, or would prefer to have the extra room for more photos or journaling, feel free to omit the title from your page. Some scrapbookers like to use a title on every page, some never use titles, and some just do whatever feels appropriate for a particular project. The choice is yours.
