Scrapbooking with Stickers
From LoveToKnow Scrapbooking
Stickers have come a long way in the past few years. Once simple things beloved by children, there is now a dizzying variety of stickers, thanks to the scrapbooking revolution.
Stickers are available in the shapes of letters and landscapes, they come decorated with glitter, embossed and three-dimensional, made from vellum and fabric. They come with themes ranging from weddings to vacation to hearts to cats. Virtually anything you want can be purchased as a sticker these days. You could easily do whole scrapbook pages embellished just with stickers. Here are some quick ideas for what to do with all those great stickers.
Photo corners
There are stickers shaped like photo corners, but you could also use other stickers related to the theme of the page as a way to hold the photos down. A picture of your dog could be held down with a sticker that says “Good dog” across the top and a sticker of a dog bowl in one corner and a dog house in another.
You can also buy stickers that are shaped like picture frames; just place your picture on the page and use the sticker to secure. Or use different borders to create a frame, or make your own border frame out of a small repeating sticker such as a heart or a star.
Borders
There are stickers that are designed to be used as borders that incorporate all sorts of themes, from seasons to friendship, adoption and new babies to sports, the beach and birthdays. Some of these borders incorporate words, while others are made of pictures or patterns.
Still other border stickers include textures or strong colors to add interest to your page. You might find a collection of borders of similar colors that you can mix and match, or use on different pages within the same book.
Of course you can also make your own borders by repeating stickers or using stickers of the same theme all around the edge of the page.
Or consider using a landscape sticker, such as a winding road, beach scene or mountain landscape, as your border, even if you don’t use it on all four sides of the page. This is a great idea for a travel page.
Titles
Stickers with words on them are available for all sorts of theme pages, from parties to grandparents, holidays to siblings. General stickers have to do with things like love, togetherness and family. Sometimes these stickers just say things like “hugs” or “I love you” but there are also stickers with quotes or longer statements like “I’m glad I’ve got a sister like you.” So there are many different things to choose from.
These stickers are great because they use interesting scripts and colors, things you might not be able to do by hand or on your computer if you have a black and white printer. They add immediate interest to your page and really stand out in a way hand-lettered titles would not.
If you can’t find the perfect words for the title of your page, you can always make your own using letter-shaped stickers. You can find alphabet stickers in script or block letters, caps and lower case. Spell out whatever you want!
Of course you can also use these stickers as part of your journaling or instead of journaling on the page.
Sticker collage
If you have a lot of different kinds of stickers related to your theme, you can combine them in a sort of mixed-media collage. Combine 3D stickers with vellum and glitter stickers, to make a 3D bride hold onto glitter flowers, or whatever combination works for you. This is a fun thing to do with extra space on a page, if you don’t fill up all the space you left for journaling or the page just looks like it needs a little something extra.
Special stickers
One special sticker could be the perfect focal point for your page. You can find stickers made of leather with words and images embossed on them, which would be great for a fall theme page or a page full of neutral colors.
Other 3D stickers have letters cut out of them so that colored paper can be seen behind them, adding an extra layer of color and texture. Or there are stamps that look like the back side of a rubber stamp, where the word is printed onto a raised block.
There are stickers that look like tags, buttons and paw prints, or that include ribbons, buttons or fabric. Epoxy stickers are kind of puffy, while other stickers include places you can write or things that move. The perfect sticker can make a scrapbook page something spectacular.
Make your own
If all else fails, you can make your own stickers using a relatively inexpensive sticker machine (which you may be able to find at your local scrapbooking store, or visit Save on Crafts. These little machines laminate the top and add adhesive to the bottom of anything you place in the machine.
Make stickers out of pictures, art from your kids, your own hand-lettered or printed out slogans, die cuts, fabric, clip art, little paper punched pieces, or anything your imagination comes up with.
These machines are great products if you expect to be doing a lot of scrapbooking or card desiging because they allow you to have completely individual scrapbook pages with your own designed stickers. And there will be no end to the things you’ll want to make stickers out of or laminate (even things not related to your scrapbook projects).
